The boss monsters

The Deer, Owl, Ram and Cat are the immortal "boss" rotation — they replace one another depending on the biome that rolled for your run. You cannot kill them; you survive them.

🦌

The Deer

Primary antagonist · Forest · Every night

A grotesque bipedal deer-creature with hollow eyes that stalks the forest after dark. It detects sound and movement, and is faster than any class on foot. Damage scales with the day count and your hunger, and on certain nights it enters a "hungry" state with red eyes and even higher speed. Night 1 is passive — the only safe night to roam the dark.

  • Crouch-walk near it; never run unless you already have a big head start.
  • Dense foliage and trees break its line of sight.
  • Stay in campfire light — it slows and avoids the glow.
  • A flashlight stuns it; climb high if your fire goes out.
🦉

The Owl

Snow biome · Replaces The Deer on some nights

The Owl is a flying night boss that replaces The Deer on certain nights. Your tell is wind picking up at nightfall and the message "The Owl has woken up". When it lands, an eye icon above you turns red as you move and white when you stand still. Hold perfectly still and it eventually flies off; keep moving and it fully alerts and attacks. It is immortal, so you survive it, not kill it.

  • Freeze in place the moment it lands nearby — standing still is the canonical counter.
  • Watch the eye icon: red means it detected your movement, white means you are safe.
  • Wind at nightfall and "The Owl has woken up" are your early warnings — prep before dark.
  • If it does attack, sprint and jump away; it dives fast but you can outrun it.
🐏

The Ram

Volcanic biome · Charges in straight lines

A charging brute that smashes through trees and base structures. It runs at you in a straight line, then is vulnerable for a moment right after it passes. Lure it away from your camp and let it crash into rocks or trees instead of your walls.

  • Jump diagonally out of its charge path.
  • Hit it right after it runs past — that is when it is tired.
  • Use rocks and trees as crash barriers, not your base.
  • It has high health — take your time and kite it.
🐱

The Cat

Jungle biome · ~1-in-3 chance per run

A large humanoid predator with a cartoonish feline face. It chases and swipes at melee range, and telegraphs a long-range pounce with a glowing red landing circle that passes through terrain. It is immortal but stunnable by the campfire or a flashlight — sidestep the red marker before it lands.

  • Watch for "The Cat has woken up" — treat it as a cat night.
  • Sidestep the red pounce circle; move perpendicular, not straight.
  • A flashlight or campfire light stuns it.
  • If The Cat is active, The Deer usually will not spawn that night.

Killable hostiles

These drop the resources you need to craft, trade and push deeper. They can be defeated — and the jump-on-back trick works great on the big ones.

🐺

Wolves & Alpha Wolves

Fast pack hunters (70 HP; Alpha 90 HP) that drop Meat, Steak and Wolf Pelts. Use the jump-on-back trick, poke them with a spear while circling, and fight one at a time. If the pack is too big, climb onto rocks or buildings.

🐻

Bears & Polar Bears

Heavy hitters — Forest Bears (300 HP) and Snow Polar Bears (500 HP). They are territorial and drop valuable pelts (the yellow-collared Bear drops the Yellow Key for the Squid Kid). Use ranged weapons in narrow spaces and bring bandages.

🪤

Cultists

Hooded waves that attack your base, dropping Mossy Coins, Ammo and Cultist Gems. Always kill the crossbow (ranged) Cultists first — their shots interrupt your movement. Build choke points and bear-trap funnels, then farm their drops after the raid.

🦇

The Bat

A blind cave-dweller that patrols near the Bat Cave. Its sonic screech summons Cultists to your position, rapidly escalating a cave trip into a multi-threat fight. It never leaves its patrol zone — mark the cave by day and give it a wide berth at night.

Survival fundamentals

  • Upgrade your campfire early — a bigger light radius keeps the Deer further out.
  • Upgrade the crafting bench for the map, bed and better weapons (Day 3 at the latest).
  • Keep fuel (logs, coal, gasoline) stocked; bunker at night, scavenge by day.
  • Jump on top of big enemies to hit them safely; use a spear to poke-and-run wolves.
  • Build light traps and overlapping fires so nothing sneaks in from the dark edges.
